I could send a png of the problem, but basically I have satellite article in right hand column, wanted the months to stack up vertically, but instead they are in one long row that goes right off the page.

how can I bring it back to within the column margins and thus creating row of previous months?

How about I give you another additional module, that only shows the links to each month, and you can choose to display it horizontally or vertically.

And then you can place this additional module anywhere you like on the page.
